I Ching Reading Divination Questions and Answers

Unread post by catherineyronwode » Sat May 12, 2012 12:56 pm

As a West Coat reader, exposed from a young age to Chinese culture, i have owned a copy of the I Ching since 1961, and have added quite a few different translations to my library over the years. Currently the editions i use for readings are:

• The Wilhem-Baynes "I Ching: Book of Changes" (1951 and still in print) -- a poetic translation.
• The Thomas Cleary Pocket Classic "I Ching: Book of Change" (1992 and still in print) -- a handy format.
• The Alfred Huang "Complete I Ching" (2010 and still in print) -- an in-depth study guide.

I mention the history and mathematical basis of the I Ching and open the door to I Ching readings, as they derive from ancient Chinese tortoise shell bone readings, in my new book, "Throwing the Bones":

AIRR Tech Team Report 5/14/2024 I Ching!

Image

The AIRR Tech Team formed a circle and greatly expanded and improved our web page on the I Ching, the ancient Chinese oracle divination method within Confucian and Taoist traditions. Fortune-Tellers use Yarrow stalks, coins, marbles, or beads to mathematically generate figures composed of six straight or broken lines and then consult this classic text in order to arrive at predictive, prescriptive, and premonitory readings for their clients. With 4,096 possible outcomes, this 3,000 year old method is the most ancient, the most complex, and potentially the most accurate, sortilege system ever devised for telling the future for clients. Catherine Yronwode wrote the page and sourced the photographs and diagrams. She had contributory assistance from Nagasiva Yronwode, Deacon Millett, Dr. E., ConjureMan, Miss Michaele, Papa Newt, and Reverend James. Papa Newt and Nagasiva did editing and site-wide linking, and Nagasiva created this graphic announcement. Check out our stupendously binary page on the I Ching!

The I Ching page is here:

We shall now move to social media, to share the I Ching page at the AIRR page on Facebook, here:

Z Mann Zilla's Pai of Panda I Ching deck is really quite good and useful for quickly constructing a Hexagram. William Rader of Artisan Tarot sent me an advance copy to piddle with, and I was taken with how well it was thought out, the attractive design, and the ease of use. Z Mann includes an instruction book which includes an excellent pocket I Ching, but of course you can use any version. Like Ms. Cat, I've used the Wilhelm-Baynes edition. It's a lot quicker than counting yarrow!
