Tea Leaf Coffee Ground Reading Divination Questions and Answers

Tea Leaf and Coffee Ground Readings -- collectively known as Tasseomancy or Cup-Reading are perhaps the most domestic and female-centered of the mantic arts. Despite being deprecated by ceremonial occultists, it is still thriving.

Image

Here is a sampling of some of the fine vintage Fortune Telling Tea Cups we sell in the Lucky Mojo Curio Co. shop.

Image

Because these are very rare (albeit not one-of-a-kind) it's a good idea to call the shop and inquire about availability and prices.

=====

This is a book i have co-written with Papa Gee, Gregory Lee White, on Tea Leaf Reading -- its history and how to do it.

The Stranger in the Cup by Gregory Lee White and Catherine Yronwode

Use in Magic:
"The Stranger in the Cup: How to Read Your Luck and Fate in the Tea Leaves" by Gregory Lee White and Catherine Yronwode. Learn how to select a cup, how to choose and brew your tea, and how to give a tasseomantic reading -- with a full dictionary of more than 750 tea leaf images, plus 36 sample cup interiors, showing what symbols the leaves may reveal. Plus, you will learn the history of tea, the history of tea-leaf reading, the history of the special tea cups marked for cartomancy, numerology, and astrology readings (and how to collect them), as well as the history of the woman-led Tea Room Movement that made tea-leaf reading the preferred fortune-telling method of the Female Suffrage Crusade. Profusely illustrated, beautifully laid out, and deeply descriptive, this is a book to treasure or to share with a special friend.

Spell Methods:
Lucky Mojo Books are filled with authentic and easy to follow instructions for practical spells of magic and fortune-telling. Enhance your success in spells of love, luck, happiness, and wealth by learning time-tested folkloric traditions of hoodoo, rootwork, psychic reading, spiritual sorcery, and herbalism.

There are one or two that I would absolutely love to add to our collection. Drool-worthy, indeed! I feel lucky to have seen that Not For Sale tea pot as well. Right place at the right time. Thank you for sharing this picture to make my brain fondly remember the tea cup shelves!

If you find that you may have an interest in reading tea leaves, is it best to do some research and read up on the practice first? And then, what aids you in selecting the appropriate cup?

California Sister,

Tea leaf reading is highly traditional and does contain "rule sets" or memorized aspects. Even those who acquire the knowledge through family traditions tend to at least create a hand-written list of meanings as they learn.

If you just want a book, without a cup, i recommend The Stranger in the Cup, which i co-wrote with Gregory Lee White (see above), and this well-put-together introduction by Saha Fenton:

I imagine the specialized cups made for tasseography, such as the ones sold at Lucky Mojo, are for effect or for ease of reading and not necessary to learn the art? A typical china teacup and saucer would be sufficient to learn this particular form of divination? Am I correct in either of my two assumptions? Thank you in advance for your time. --Bobby

Hello, bobbyjsimmons,

The ones sold at Lucky Mojo are designed in a way that the tea leaves sit well in the cup and make associations with other symbols (marked inside the cups) and thus the reader will have a better outcome of visualizing the symbols.

They are vintage, and therefore, what the expert "old timers" used.

Modern sets may be distorted in shape (or whatever manufacturers do to change styles), so be sure you buy a "cup-shaped cup.

You can find the vintage cups here: www.luckymojo.com/mojocatdivination.html

If you're learning the art, wishing you the best and PLEASE share your outcomes with us!

Take care

We sell a full-colour facsimile reproduction of the instruction booklet. Not a highly pupolar item, because of the cost of hand-making each one, but here it is!

Since I am in this thread I thought I would drop this here: I have had nothing but wonderful results when using the Nor-Sun Pu-Ehr loose black tea leaves that Lucky Mojo offers. The leaves are distinct and pronounced, the images seem to pop out quickly, and the tea itself tastes divine. Well worth the purchase.

Those look AMAZING!!! tea/coffee ground readings is something I'd like to look into. Right now I'm pretty much starting out about a month into this kind of magic, but have been reading tarot longer than that. Just learned some new spreads. I'll bet you a tarot AND tea leaf reading would give extra awesome insight when contemplating a situation.

Thanks for jumping onto this thread -- it gives me an opportunity to remind folks that my fortune telling tea cup collection is online in its own space, The Mystic Tea Room!

http://MysticTeaRoom.com

Image

At this site you will find photos and text information about hundreds of different fortune telling cups, plus a free tea leaf reading guide, examples of tea leaf reading in popular art, and a fully functional Gift Shop where you may purchase antique cups and facsimiles of the instruction-sheets that came with them from the Lucky Mojo Curio Co,

http://www.mystictearoom.com/wiki/Gift_Shop

The Mystic Tea Room web site is "built out" in structural form with photos, but not all of the pages have been fully filled with text at this time. Please be patient as i work my way through the tea cups, page by page, and supply more data.

Of all the things available for readers, reading tea leaves is what I have always wanted to learn how to do. I'm heading over right now to check this out, because this is truly something I want to learn more about.

The Mystic Tea Room on Social Media: OPENING JANUARY 1, 2021!

On January 1st, 2021, the Mystic Tea Room will go LIVE on social media, with a wonderful giveaway sweepstakes. The page will be opened up for LIKERS and FOLLOWERS and we will award two great prizes at random to those who sign up on Day One! Look for details at the Facebook pages for Catherine Yronwode, The Lucky Mojo Curio Co., the Yronwode Institution for the Preservation and Popularization of Indigenous Ethnomagicology (YIPPIE), or Divination Fortune Telling Oracles.

Mystic Tea Room Social Media will enter the scene on JANUARY 1st 2021 -- which coincidentally falls on the first Lucky Mojo Facebook Fridays! giveaway of 2021 (!). To promote the new Mystic Tea Room page, Lucky Mojo will give away two boxed Jane Lyle Cup of Destiny tea cup sets plus accompanying copies of the new Stranger in the Cup book by Gregory Lee White and catherine yronwode.

Facebook Fridays giveaways have been running at Lucky Mojo's FB page since 2014, but unlike all other Facebook Fridays! contests, this one will be held at the Mystic Tea Room Facebook page, not the LMCCo page -- and we will announce in advance that the winners will only be selected from among those who LIKE the new MTR page. That should get us some great likes on Day One.

So mark your calendars, get your clicking fingers ready -- and on JANUARY 1st 2021, be prepared to go to The Mystic Tea Room on Facebook <-- Remember, it is not live yet! We will give you the link on January 1st, 2021.

When you get there, please "like" the new MTR page so that we can reach more people, and then leave your greeting comment to be entered in the contest. Thanks!

P.S. This is the Tudor Rose Tea Room in Santa Rosa, California. For more fabulous Tea Room images, go to http://mystictearoom.com/wiki/Vintage_T ... _Postcards

The Year of Living Vicariously (Public release)

In this installment of "From the Land of Tea," we release a new page which provides insights into my personal life, by way of examining four postcards in depth. It is not simply about tea rooms; it is about everything and nothing, really, about Palm trees in cache-pots and Pelargoniums in tin cans, about table linens and polished wood.

Some of my vintage and antique books on tea leaf reading. As you can see, many of these are well worn — because I have been a tea leaf reader for 60 years. My services can be booked via the Association of Independent Readers and Rootworkers as well as at Hoodoo Psychics (1-888-4-HOODOO extension 1111). I also give free readings weekly on the Lucky Mojo Hoodoo Rootwork Hour podcast. Sign up at the Lucky Mojo Forum for a free reading and rootwork advice. This brand new web page bears an innocuous-sounding name -- but oh what oddities that title hides! We learn of Madame Evelyn, and Ross, and Bernice, and the Old Leatherneck himself, the one and only Republican Tea Leaf Reading Marine Corps Veteran, M. E. Businger. Plus -- Fortune tellers under arrest! The rise of the Christian Right! The New Temple of Fortune!

Thanks to my Patrons, who contribute as little as $2.00 per week for an exclusive one-year sneak-peek behind the scenes, i am able to write a new web page every week on the history of folk magic and divination. This week you can go to

to read the delightful history and practice of tea leaf readers telling fortunes for clients in tea rooms and restaurants. And please, consider supporting me on Patreon so i can keep on writing "It's All Ephemera!"

“Six Girls and the Tea Room" by Marion Ames Taggart, a young adult novel published by W. A. Wilde, 1907; illustrated by William F. Stecher. This is a charming coming-of-age book set in the Tea Room Movement, as five sisters, their brother, and their widowed mother, plus an adopted Pennsylvania Dutch girl, decide to start a tea room as a source of income in New York City. Unexpected themes of tragic love among members of the immigrant arts and dance community, as well as a long-term loyal lesbian friendship that dares not speak its name, give the story a bit more sophistication and spice than I was expecting. Its model is, of course, “Little Women,” but there is a foreshadowing of “Nancy Drew” as well, and the dear little chunky Japanese teapots from Mardine’s (a stand-in for Vantine’s, of course) are properly cooed over, as is the mysterious piano that comes with the rented tea room space, and the mysteriously sad man who drops by for tea and asks if he may play it. Recommended for tea room enthusiasts and those who like antique YA fiction.

The Stranger in the Cup: How to Read Your Luck and Fate in the Tea Leaves with Papa Gee

Tasseomancy or Tea Leaf Reading is probably as old as the invention of drinking cups. Some claim it originated in China, but it seems to have been native to Scotland, Ireland, and England before trade with China developed, and came to America with the earliest settlers. Meanwhile, it is also found in the Middle East as a method for reading coffee grounds. This class is based on the book "The Stranger in the Cup" by Gregory Lee White and Catherine Yronwode.

Readying myself for this afternoon's live broadcast of the Lucky Mojo Hoodoo Rootwork Hour, i will have my usual afternoon tea. Today it will be Darjeeling -- a particular brand first sent to me by my friend and fellow AIRR, HP, and Lucky Mojo Forum member JayDee, and now a firm household favourite -- and it will be brewed for me by nagasiva with this darling 1910 sterling silver tea infuser. Anything worth doing is worth doing extravagantly, and a home without at least one antique sterling silver tea ball is a poor home indeed. In my family, all my life, no matter how broke-ass we were, there was always a sterling silver tea infuser, a memory of grandmotherly graciousness or a special keepsake acquired as a gift of marriage. I have been married often enough to have FOUR antique sterling silver tea balls to choose from -- and one beautiful keepsake husband to brew my cup of tea.

Here is one of my favourite fortune-telling tea cups -- and one of the first in my collection. It is a British-made Jackson and Gosling Ye Olde English shape cup and saucer with a checkered band and a Cup of Knowledge cartomancy patterned interior. I use it to read tea leaves and cards at the same time! See many more such cups at TheMysticTeaRoom.com

Thanks to my Patrons, who contribute as little as $2.00 per week for an exclusive one-year sneak-peek behind the scenes, i am able to write a new web page every week on the history of folk magic and divination. This week, we leap into the past, exploring the tea rooms of bygone America, specifically in Massachusetts, a state replete with historical buildings, old mills, hooked rugs, and colonial-style furniture. On today's journey we will visit 16 towns and 16 tea rooms, some long vanished and some still in use as eateries. One was destroyed by a hurricane, and you will even see the sad aftermath of that event.

This week's release is a bit shorter than last week's, but it is every bit as thorough. Names and dates have been researched, i have swooned over rarities, and if i don't like a waste of paper, i bluntly say so. Part Two concludes, for now, the enormous task of reviewing every tea-leaf reading book i own, and now that the list is public, y'all can go haunt eBay for bargains because starting today, the sellers will start to adjust their prices to reflect each book's rarity and desirability.

This week i am continuing my work for The Mystic Tea Room with a new article, "Viewing the Cup" -- inspired by my incredible lucky find of a circa 1940 King Features press photo that shows Nedra, a professional tea leaf reader in a New York City restaurant, in the act of telling a customer's fortune. By examining this large photo closely, we are able to learn a lot about Nedra and her method of tea leaf reading. If you love divination methods, you may be in for a surprise. Go to

It's another journey into the bygone tea rooms of 20th century America, this time in Indiana, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, and Pennsylvania. On today's trip we will visit a tea room based on a once famous radio show, two Chinese tea rooms, one Japanese tea room that served Chinese food, and an American tea room that used Japanese imagery but served only "home cooking."

Thanks to my Patrons, who contribute as little as $2.00 per week for an exclusive one-year sneak-peek behind the scenes, i am able to write a new web page every week on the history of folk magic and divination. This week we explore the tea rooms of rugged Scotland, where, despite the rough weather, drinking tea outdoors is a summertime treat. Scotland is famous for its many battles and historical markers, and there seems to be a tea room nearby to each and every one of them.

When one thinks of tea rooms in Virginia, the idea of British Colonial high tea no doubt comes to mind -- and indeed, we do tour a tea room planted on the site of George Washington's birthplace -- but Virginia is more diverse than you might imagine, with a Japanese tea room, a cozy Blue Jay auto court tea room, a tea room hidden in a garden, a dramatically coloured service station tea room, and, of course, for no reason at all, a tea room named after the Ella Cinders comic strip, with her picture on the signage! Come along and join the fun -- and learn a little bit about how tea rooms fit in with the National Park Service, silent movies, and Esso Standard Products.

After one year as a Patreon exclusive, "Old Virginia Tea Rooms" has been unlocked and is available to the public.

Thanks to my Patrons, who contribute as little as $2.00 per week for an exclusive one-year sneak-peek behind the scenes, i am able to write a new web page every week on the history of folk magic and divination. After a year, these pages are given to the public to read for free. This week's released page is "Vintage Tea Room Business Cards and Advertisements." If you think that locating and cleaning up postcard images for ancient tea rooms is difficult, wait until you start trying to collect business cards for these evanescent and historical businesses and cleaning them up to the condition of bright newness that web browsers desire and require. Suffice it to say, working long hours, we proudly present an even dozen new tea room business cards images for Patrons today, ranging from 1907 through Mid-Century Modern, and located in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.
After one year as a Patreon exclusive, this page has been unlocked and is available to the public.

After a year, these pages are given to the public to read for free. This week "The 1965 Regency Fortune Cup" is due for release!

Image

In keeping with the Winter theme of warm tea and tea-leaf reading, this week's offering is a genuine rarity, the Snowhite Regency Fortune Cup containing 52 playing cards and made by the Johnson Brothers Pottery of England for an extremely elusive couple named Verna A. and John W. Meredith, who copyrighted the cup in the U.S.A. and promptly disappeared. Cartomancy tea cups are not common, but this cup is so hard to find that in all my years of collecting, i have only seen it put up for sale twice, once in 2011 without a saucer, and once in 2017 as a complete cup and saucer set.

The Johnson Brothers pottery was among the world's largest manufacturers of table ware, but they never made another divination cup during the entire run of the company, from 1882 to 2015. My brand-new "Johnson Brothers" pottery company category-page and the heavily illustrated page on "The Fortune Cup" are online now for the public to view.

In June of 2023, thanks to the support of my Patrons, The Mystic Tea Room opened a "Bibliography of Books about Tasseomancy" to the public. That page joined an earlier MTR page on "Tea Company Booklets," which included pamphlets filled with information from tea growers about tea drinking and the tea industry, as well a few that described tea cup reading. This week i present a one-year first glimpse at another aspect of the booklet proposition, namely instructional "Pottery Company Booklets" issued by the china ware companies that manufactured tasseomantic cups. From Alfred Meakin and Aynsley to Wimsatt and Zarka, here are the collectible, colourful, and almost-impossible-to-find pamphlets that once accompanied the lovely astrological, cartomantic, numerological, and symbolic fortune telling cups of yore.

This week in "From the Land of Tea," we make a second pass through the almost forgotten world of department store and restaurant tea rooms, including tea rooms that doubled as psychic reading parlours.

Most psychic readers who set up in tea rooms had their own business card, but the tea room proprietors themselves tended to use a standard restaurant advertising medium, the matchbook cover.

At one time matchbooks were given out for free by almost every business in America, but when smoking was outlawed in restaurants, these ubiquitous pieces of commercial art became less common. They are still with us, but most folks now carry petroleum-fueled lighters.

Vintage matchbook covers tell us the amazing history of tea rooms and tea room themes, including tea room divination. This new web page, "Vintage Tea Room Matchbook Covers No. 2," takes us down the matchbook rabbit hole once again, to a little pocket-dimension of graphic delight.

Hello, everyone, and thank you for supporting "It's All Ephemera"!

The Mystic Tea Room is taking a journey to the Continent to visit the amazing bygone landmarks of conditerei, confiserei, patisserie, and hotel-pensione tea culture that flourished in Switzerland during the first half of the 20th century. From the basements of Zurich to the Mythen Mountains of Montana-Vermala, this is a grand tour for all lovers of cozy tea room and restaurant architecture and interior decor -- with a twist Yes, there will be white linen, rattan chairs, floral stencilling, and potted palms, but we will also meet daring American Red Cross volunteers and receive a warning to "use only radio-interference-free devices."

"Old Tea Rooms of Switzerland" is online now for my Patrons, in gratitude for your support. The public will not view it until May 14th, 2026, at which point it will be open to all, as a souvenir of times gone by.

[THE SECRET URL IS SENT TO PATRONS VIA EMAIL]

The Mystic Tea Room web site is dedicated to the traditional art of fortune telling by tea leaves, also known as tea leaf reading, cup reading, cup tossing, divination by tea leaves, tasseomancy, and tasseography. If you are not yet familiar with the public portion of the site, check it out!

Reading tea leaves means having tea on hand, so this week we present our second illustrated gallery of antique and vintage tea tins from all around the world. This is all about the Mystic Arts -- with the emphasis firmly on Art. The new array of tins will be on display at the Mystic Tea Room web site for everyone to enjoy in May of 2026, but my dear Patrons will have access to it one full year before the public does.

Hello, everyone, and thank you for supporting "It's All Ephemera"!

You can't read tea leaves without tea, so tasseomancers tend to become tea-lovers, and that means sampling many types of tea. You can't buy tea without a tea company to grow it and importers to blend and pack it. And the tea companies can't tell you how wonderful their tea is without promotional material. Back in the early 20th century, at the height of the proliferation of grocery distributors, every tea company handed out brochures and booklets to magnify the glory of their products, and since this era was also the height of graphic art and design, the tea company booklets were works of stupendous artistry. This week we present a sneak peek at a wonderfully illustrated gallery of antique and vintage tea company booklets. Tea leaf reading is one of the Mystic Arts -- but as a reader, i always put the emphasis firmly on Art. These lovely graphics will be on display at the Mystic Tea Room web site for everyone to enjoy in May of 2026, but my dear Patrons will have access to it for one full year before the public does, in gratitude for their financial support.

Today we take a side trip from Vintage Tea Rooms and visit When ladies got together to play bridge in the 1950s, what better side-play was there than reading one another's tea leaves? The Queen Anne Lady Luck tea cup, saucer, and sandwich sets by Shore and Coggings came in arrays of four -- a colour-coded set for each suit -- and half the fun was deciding whether to choose the Diamonds cup because you had questions about money, or because Diamonds rule Earth signs, or because your new cashmere sweater just matches the delicate leaf-green that edges the playing cards on the cup.

The Shore and Coggins pottery was in business from 1887 to 1966, but they only made one type of tasseomancy cup -- the Queen Anne Lady Luck range. Still, they have earned their right to a full history page at the Mystic Tea Room. My brand-new "Shore and Coggins" pottery company category-page and the heavily illustrated page on "Queen Anne Lady Luck" are online now for my Patrons, in gratitude for their financial support. These images are now on display at the Mystic Tea Room web site for every tea lover and tea leaf reader to enjoy.
