Thanks to my Patrons, who contribute as little as $2.00 per week for an exclusive one-year sneak-peek behind the scenes, i am able to write a new web page every week on the history of folk magic and divination. This week in "Where the Southern Cross the Yellow Dog," we have an interview with a man of mixed Black, Choctaw, and French ancestry who was known as the "Indian Herb Doctor" of Marion, Illinois. In 1941 he was interviewed by a local writer named Beulah M. DeVard for a never-published book, "The Negro in Illinois." For more than 80 years, her faded manuscript pages lay crumbling in a library archive. Now, thanks to digitization and the support of my Patrons, we have transcribed this forgotten piece of herbal history for the benefit of all.

This week's Patreon sneak-peek page is the first part of a set of comical numerological fortune telling cards published and machine-vended by the Mutoscope Company of Chicago, Illinois in the 1940s. Mutoscope, which began as a maker of coin-operated peep-show films, also provided pin-up and celebrity postcards which were marketed primarily in men's spaces, such as bars, pool halls, tobacconists, and liquor stores. Each Lucky Number card contains 6 digits for lottery play, a slightly risqué or misogynistic joke, and a burlesque cartoon. They sure don't make them like this any more!

When one thinks of tea rooms in Virginia, the idea of British Colonial high tea no doubt comes to mind -- and indeed, we do tour a tea room planted on the site of George Washington's birthplace -- but Virginia is more diverse than you might imagine, with a Japanese tea room, a cozy Blue Jay auto court tea room, a tea room hidden in a garden, a dramatically coloured service station tea room, and, of course, for no reason at all, a tea room named after the Ella Cinders comic strip, with her picture on the signage! Come along and join the fun -- and learn a little bit about how tea rooms fit in with the National Park Service, silent movies, and Esso Standard Products.

What's more, they convey the mystical meanings of popular flowers, from back in the day, 110 years ago, when the occult was as cute as a button and cost just a penny to mail anywhere in the USA. This week in "It's All Ephemera" we catch up on "Hoodoo in Theory and Practice in Progress," with a complicated annotation to what seems on the surface to be a very simple mojo hand. In this 1938 interview with Informant #863, The Unkus Man, the folklorist Harry M. Hyatt wanders into the weeds and runs afoul of language and concepts for which he was not quite prepared. A little bit of background knowledge makes it all clear, and the true story of "Dr. Delong" and the "leather pell tellman caseman" is revealed. If you like your hoodoo with a sprinkling of kabbalah on the side, you'll love this one!

This week in "It's All Ephemera" we catch up on "Hoodoo in Theory and Practice in Progress," with a series of spells involving truth-telling and tattletales. They all center around the power of the American Mockingbird as the means to accomplish one's goals, with a side-trip into similar spells employing the power of Parrots, Catbirds, Cockatoos, Budgies, and Brown Thrashers.

This illustrated web page describes rural root doctoring of the early 20th century using bird tongues, feathers, and eggs to either silence people or make them spill the truth in court, in love, in family matters, or in social situations.

"The Dream Book Bibliography, Part One at YIPPIE," is the first episode in what we can all only assume will be my stab at a creating a lushly illustrated Dream Book cover gallery and annotated bibliography series, hosted at The Yronwode Institution for the Preservation and Popularization of Indigenous Ethnomagicology. The books come from my collection, the scanning and cleanup of the art have been a joint project spearheaded with my husband nagasiva, and the write-ups of the books are my own take on what makes each title different from another. This week in "It's All Ephemera" we continue the "Hoodoo in Theory and Practice in Progress" collection of dishrag spells and also include hat bow tricks that can be cured with dirty dishrags. There is a lot more to rootwork than the simple candle magic you will find all over the internet, and each new portion of "Washcloths and Dishrags in Hoodoo and Conjure" reveals time-tested techniques for job-getting, love-holding, nature-tying, dreaming of your future mate, curing bad luck, protecting yourself from magic, driving enemies away, and cursing -- with nothing more than a washcloth or a dishrag as a personal concern.

This week in "Blues Lyrics and Hoodoo" my Patrons are getting a one-year Patreon exclusive illustrated and annotated transcription from my collection of 20th century blues lyrics about African-American folk magic. Johnny Shines, who was born in Frayser, Tennessee, in 1915, travelled and performed with Robert Johnson from 1935-1938, and in 1969 he recorded a previously unknown song composed, but never recorded, by Johnson, called "Going to Algiers." Written in 1935, recorded in 1969, and only released to the public in 1995, this song about a mojo hand and the fabled Seven Sisters of Hoodoo Town came so close to being lost forever that it will make your head spin. No transcription of it exists on the internet as of this writing, but i have done my best to set forth the lyrics for my patrons, who have a one year exclusive on this new web page, in gratitude for their financial support for my work as a documentarian of folklore, folk magic, and fortune telling.

This week's Patreon sneak-peek page is the first part of our complete set of the 1923 Wills's Cigarette Cards set called "Lucky Charms."" This inaugurates the completion of a series on these cards that i first started in 1994. I did not finish the series 30 years ago (So many scans! So much text! From 1910 through 1960, fortune telling machines were a common sight across America, from the Wate and Fate scale in your local Greyhound Bus station to the Exhibit Supply Company vending machine in the local bar that dispensed postcards showing hands of poker cards with their divinatory meanings. But it was Earl L. Crabb, the inventor of the Planetellus horoscope vending machine, who brought a real yearly horoscope for every sign of the zodiac to the small towns, the little restaurants, the taverns, and the tea shops of the American Midwest. Hello everyone, and thank you for supporting "It's All Ephemera"!

This week's Patreon sneak-peek page marks our fourth go-round in the rather complex task of scanning and transcribing all 50 of the 1923 "Wills's Lucky Charms" cigarette cards by William Thomas Pavitt and Kate Pitt Pavitt, commenting on their content, cross-linking them, and uploading the finished pages to the Lucky W Amulet Archive for permanent display. The behind-the scenes prep work supporting this seemingly cute project has become a bit overwhelming, as we decided to tear our earlier templates down and re-make the code, and we also bought a new, and supposedly better, scanner to replace our old one. After getting the new scanner up and running, we realized it was a TERRIBLE scanner. It could not distinguish denim blue from grey-blue or grey, and it perceived darker blue-green as black! Siva had already scanned several cards ahead and had cleaned up one card, front and back, when he showed me his first results -- and i was horrified! All that work -- and an entire new machine -- useless. The damned scanner was visually auto-tuning chromolithographic ink colours to a limited palette range of pre-sets. I hate it! I want to smash it with a hammer! Even a child should not be given a scanner this crappy to use as a pre-school toy! So Siva had to start scanning again, from scratch, while i forged on ahead of him with more text. But without the images, the text is nothing, of course, so we only have one card for our Patrons tonight, and getting it online was stressful and wearisome as Hell. Between that unexpected glitch-and-fix and our ongoing care for the shop cat, Boots, who is convalescing in the downstairs bathroom, we are running behind this week. We hope to get back on track next week. Virgo is now ready for our Patrons to enjoy!

This week's Patreon sneak-peek page marks our fifth dip into the intricate project of scanning and transcribing all 50 of the beautiful 1923 "Wills's Lucky Charms" cigarette cards by William Thomas Pavitt and Kate Pitt Pavitt, commenting on their content, cross-linking them, and uploading the finished pages to the Lucky W Amulet Archive for permanent display. The preparation that underlies this work is ongoing, but we have put last week's scanner woes behind us and are working at a nice clip now. I have transcribed, coded, and annotated all of the Zodiac talisman texts and Siva is busily cleaning up their scans while i forge ahead into the upcoming 38 texts that describe the gorgeously rendered chromolithographic illustrations that comprise the bulk of the card set of precious amulets from the British Museum.

This week's Patreon sneak-peek page presents our sixth pass through the scanning, cleanup, and text transcriptions of all 50 of the resplendent 1923 "Wills's Lucky Charms" cigarette cards by William Thomas Pavitt and Kate Pitt Pavitt depicting a selected set of precious amulets from the British Museum. This week i have transcribed, coded, and annotated the final three Zodiac talisman texts and Siva has scanned and cleaned up the images. As we work on each card, we are also cross-linking these miniature chromolithographic masterpieces to other Lucky Mojo pages on astrological folk magic. The finished cigarette cards are available for Patreon members now -- and next year the entire set will open to the public for permanent display at the Lucky W Amulet Archive. Thanks to my Patrons, who contribute as little as $8.00 per month for an exclusive one-year sneak-peek behind the scenes, i am able to write a new web page every week on the history of folk magic and divination.

The 20th century was a time when lucky tokens, pocket pieces, and mascots were manufactured in vast quantities and given out to customers by companies of all kinds. Everyone believed in luck in those days, and these talismans, often called "Good Luck Coins," although they had no monetary value, were carefully saved by the folks who got them. I have collected such exonumia for more than 50 years, and a couple of decades ago i put a few samples up for show at my Lucky Mojo site. This week i am sharing another batch of them, with commentary.

Lucky W Amulet Archive: Lucky Charms on Wills's Cigarette Cards in 1923: Tier 3 AUGUST 7th, 2024

Hello everyone, and thank you for supporting "It's All Ephemera"!

This week my Patreon supporters receive a preview of our seventh pass through the scanning, cleanup, text transcriptions, and annotations of all 50 of the much loved 1923 "Wills's Lucky Charms" cigarette cards by William Thomas Pavitt and Kate Pitt Pavitt. These antique trading cards showcase a selected set of the rarest and most precious talismans in the collection of the British Museum. This week i have transcribed, coded, and annotated the first four of the 38 ancient amulet texts and Siva has scanned and cleaned up their glorious chromolithographic images. As we work on each card, we also cross-link these miniature masterpieces to other Lucky Mojo pages on world-wide folk magic. The finished cigarette cards are only available for Patreon members now -- but next year, thanks to their financial support, the entire set will open to the public for permanent display at the Lucky W Amulet Archive.
