This week in "Your Wate and Fate," i open the door to the almost forgotten world of the psychic readers, numerologists, clairvoyants, and cartomancers of the 19th and 20th centuries, as manifested in the ephemera they have left us -- their business cards, advertisements, and photographs.

Two weeks ago my Patreon web page on "Having Your Fortune Read At a Tea Room" surveyed the territory of psychics who served their clients in tea shops. Now the gates swing wide on Scientific Palmists in downtown offices, Clairvoyants in big blue trailers travelling the American South, and touring stage entertainers who gave private readings to clients between the matinee and the evening show.

This week, as i am preparing my video presentation for the 2021 Hoodoo Heritage Festival workshop on "Down-Home Sex Magic," "Your Wate and Fate," returns to the lost world of the psychic readers, numerologists, clairvoyants, and cartomancers of the 19th and 20th centuries, with four new additions to the page.

Two weeks ago my Patreon web page on "The Realm of he Readers" opened the door on the shadowy shades of those who came before. This time a bit more light is shed, as we meet one fortune teller of 1915 who offers to take off spells caused by "Hoodoo, Witchcraft and Conjurations," and yet another reader who breaks with 1920s convention to offer readings "for white and colored," until, lest we feel too optimistic, we run smack dab into a tea leaf reader working out of a World's Fair building that promotes American unity with Hitler's Nazi Germany. Yes, then as now, occultism ran the cultural gamut from the angelic to the demonic. So it was. So it is.

Due to the preparations for the September 11th-12th Virtual Hoodoo Heritage Festival, i was unable to finish curating and packing the AUGUST 2021 boxes on time. In fact, much to my shame, i only finished them today, September 27th!

The material at Southern Spirits was gathered from a variety of sources, including old books, magazine articles, newspapers, and even fragments extracted from novels and short stories. This is Part Two of our four-part husband-and-wife collaboration on the resurrection, restoration, and interpretation of the amazing "How To Tell Fortunes" Cigarette Cards by Edwards, Ringer and Bigg. This week nagasiva has finished the photoshopping, and i have completed the transcription and annotation of the six cartomancy instruction cards from 1929, which present a complete and unique form of card reading by the Cross of Fifteen. This is neither the Celtic Cross tarot layout nor the Method of Fifteen playing card layout. In fact, the Cross of Fifteen is unlike any other card layout and, surprisingly, it offers unexpected insights into British tasseomancy and folk magic. Stay tuned, because the series continues next week with Tea Leaf Reading, and then concludes with Palmistry. When Hoodoo Was Illegal: The Old Chief Medicine Co.

This week in "Where the Southern Cross the Yellow Dog," i take a look at the United States Food and Drug Administration's successful legal action to destroy traditional American herbal knowledge that had its roots in ancient Native American medicine.

This illustrated page brings us the story of A. L. Machris and the Old Chief Medicine Co. of Detroit, Michigan, a mail-order house that purchased bulk herbal teas from Joseph E. Meyer's Indiana Botanic Gardens in Hammond, Indiana. Lucky for us, while ordering several shipments of these folkloric medicines to be destroyed, the FDA also carefully noted down all of the ingredients in six different remedies -- so now you can make your own!

Conjure Doctoring and the Walking Boy: From the Southern Workman and Hampton School Record, Vol. 28 August 1899

Hello, everyone, and thank you for supporting "It's All Ephemera"! This week in "Where the Southern Cross the Yellow Dog," i take a look at how African-Americans were documenting hoodoo and conjure practices in the 19th century.

1) "Conjure Doctoring and the Walking Boy: From the Southern Workman and Hampton School Record, Vol. 28 August 1899" presents three personal anecdotes of root doctoring experienced by a young student-teacher between 1885 and 1895. Not only are her recollections a rare example of black Americans collecting and publishing their own folklore prior to 1900, the forms of divination used by the root doctors are very old and obscure today. In particular, the secret of diagnosing hoodoo with a walking boy is almost unknown at the present time, and is described here in detail.

1) "THE CONJURE DOCTORS OF VIRGINIA" by Rev. Daniel Webster Davis, from the Southern Workman and Hampton School Record, Vol. 27, December 1898.

This illustrated page brings us a memoir written in 1898 by Rev. Daniel Webster Davis, in which he describes the Virginia conjure doctors of his youth. Born into slavery during the Civil War, Davis became a public school teacher, a poet, and a teacher to other black educators. An upwardly aspirational man who played an active role in the progressive politics of the 19th century, he also documented a recipe for a buried bottle spell that is virtually identical to those still found in 21st century hoodoo.

This illustrated and annotated web page describes the belief in witchcraft and the practices of divination among enslaved people of African descent before Emancipation. The author, Jacob Stroyer, lived these events at first hand as a slave, and his memoir provides priceless insights into the folkloric beliefs of African-American witchcraft practitioners of the mid-19th century.

This illustrated and annotated web page describes conjure, root doctoring, and witchcraft among enslaved and emancipated people of African descent in Knoxville Tennessee and rural Texas. The narrator, Patsy Moses, was born into slavery and was interviewed by a member of the Federal Writer's Project in 1937, when she was 74 years old. She was a gifted story-teller, and her memories of the conjure remedies told to her by her grandfather Ned Butler are beautifully recounted. Her mythological tale of the origins of the Barred Owl, as well her tales of Hallowe'en games and the interpretations of dreams, provide rare and wonderful glimpses into the folkloric beliefs of African-American conjure in the mid-to late 19th century.

This week in "Where the Southern Cross the Yellow Dog," i present a rare look at hard-core methods of cursing and killing with conjure, as collected and published by black folklorists in the 19th century. This unique perspective on African-American magic is unmediated by white academic theorizing, and consists of two dozen spells to bring about illness and loss of life.

This illustrated and annotated web page describes conjure, root doctoring, and witchcraft as practiced among formerly enslaved and recently emancipated people of African descent in the state of Virginia in 1875. Techniques consist of direct consumption of spiritual poisons as well as contact magic through the feet and hands.

The Southern Spirits web site includes material about hoodoo gathered from old books, magazine articles, newspapers, and fragments extracted from novels and short stories, annotated with interpretive and comparative notes. A companion piece to my 2021 series on chromolitho fortune telling postcards of the early 20th century, this page presents "Fortune Series Number 37" -- known to collectors as "Halloween Witches Fortune Cards" and "Your Fortune Halloween Witch and Owls." In fact, nothing specifically ties this set of cards to Halloween, since every month in the year is shown, and instead of pumpkins, we see a weird landscape with a castle, owls, bats, a raven, and a wizard waving a magical rod over a campfire under the Moon, while before him stands a tail-up black cat, a copper tea kettle, a covered jar of potted meat, a tipped-over wine bottle, a porcelain cup, and a hunk of bread. Each card's text is fully transcribed, as is every card's symbolic gem, flower, zodiac sign, lucky months, and lucky days of the week.

After a year for Patrons to enjoy, this material will make its way to the public-facing pages of the Your Wate and Fate web site, which is dedicated to the unusual but traditional forms of fortune telling. If you are not yet familiar with the site, check it out!
