I have a recurring pattern in my life where my world (especially my social world) periodically disintegrates--social ties to community and groups dissolve (due to relocation or life-changes or any number of other factors), core pieces of identity change (usually for good reason, but the result is still disconnection), and things that I may have thought were stable foundations in my life simply cease to be. As I come into midlife, I feel like I've expended lots of effort, but have little to show for it, and I don't have the same optimism that I can simply rebuild my life from scratch that I did when I was younger.
