Hoodoo Bibliography and Book Suggestions for African American Folk Magic
Re: Hoodoo Bibliography and Book Suggestions for African American Folk Magic
I had this idea before. I really like the spells directed in Lucky Mojo spell kits and feel a connection I don't feel in many of the spells commonly found in spell books.
I had this idea based on 1, the fact I would like to read more of the spell kit instructions without buying the full sets first. 2, Because I loved "Hoodoo Herb and Root Theory" and think a spell book would be a great companion. and 3, Because I think it would be a good medium to add more spells not found in kits.
Would like to hear what others think of this suggestion

I agree that the Black Folder is a wonderful resource, to read as well to use!
Have you considered taking the HR Correspondence Course? You will be glad you did. There is so much more in the course on top of what you learn here at the Forum, as well as at HITAP. I found it to be a fascinating look into the cultural foundations, history, spirituality and psychology of the work, as well as the practical teachings. It gives you the confidence of being able to create your own spells and combinations, not just from what is in books. All of these things taken together are quite a good education! I hope you will consider it! Do not be intimidated by the commitment required, the interview with Cat, etc. If you are serious about wanting to study and see it through, you will be successful. Good luck to you!

Re: Hoodoo Bibliography and Book Suggestions for African American Folk Magic
Hello One and All;
I just received my first order of books from Lucky Mojo and all I can say is "OH MY STARS"!!! They were all exactly what I hoped they would be and more! I am soooooo happy! Usually when I order books, well.... they're good but sometimes they aren't exactly what the description said they'd be. But, my books from Lucky Mojo, were exactly what I would hope for and more. Especially, "The Black Folder". I expected it to be - well a black folder filled with pages of hole punched essays. Well no... it is actually a soft cover book collection of what the description said it would be, it is fantastic. The following is a list of what I ordered;
The Master Book of Candle Burning - Henri Gamache
I had originally ordered, The Art of Hoodoo Candle Magic by Catherine Yronwode, but it was out of stock, so I substituted with this book. Even though it wasn't exactly what I would have wanted, it is still a very useful book and I had intended to buy it at a later date anyway. This book gives plenty of background and philosophical information regarding the art of candle burning as well as a short description of candle burning signs to be aware of. The list of spells is especially useful.
Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic - Catherine Yronwode
This is one of the most well thought out herbals I've seen in a long while. It gives the spiritual uses of herbs, roots and minerals as well as a collection of zoological curio information. I particularly love the manner by which the spiritual uses of any given herbs are listed in clear and concise detailed descriptions. This is much more informative than the typical list of words listed after an herb i.e.;protective, clearing, love, etc. The descriptions give detailed useful listings such as "To Make Your Money Go Farther", and the method by which to use the herb in just that manner. If their are more uses for an herb (and in most cases there are), each use will be listed and in the same manner as described above.
Encyclopedia of Mystics, Saints & Sages - Judika Illes
This is exactly the book I've been looking for. It lists noted spiritual people in an encyclopedic manner with detailed life information as available as well as all the pertinent correspondences associated with them such as offerings, attributes, rituals etc.
The Black Folder - edited by Catherine Yronwode
"The Black Folder" well what can one say? It IS NOT a black folder compiled with three holed punched xerox copied pages. It is actually a large soft covered book made to look like a black folder. It contains so many things contributed by many of the well known Hoodoo specialists that we've come to know and love via; The Lucky Mojo Hoodoo and Rootwork Hour. Spells, prayers, cookery, divination and so much more!
Oh, well... I'm just going on and on and I'll leave things at that. I'm very happy with my books and I just wanted to let everyone know LOL!
Regards!

Re: Hoodoo Bibliography and Book Suggestions for African American Folk Magic
I'm planning to buy one of the books from Lucky Mojo that deal with the Key of Solomon. I think there are three of them. I would like to ask anyone who knows more about those particular books to advise me on which one to start with? I don't know very much about the books but
would like to learn.
would like to learn.
Re: Hoodoo Bibliography and Book Suggestions for African American Folk Magic
Hello, candiijojo
My suggestion is to start with this one: The Key of Solomon the King (Clavicula Salomonis)
Good luck!

Re: Hoodoo Bibliography and Book Suggestions for African American Folk Magic
hi everybody its good to be here again. So today what i wanted to talk about is i orderd three books that I've had my eyes on for a LONG time: the Art Of Hoodoo Candle MAgic, The Black Folder and Hoodoo Honey and Sugar spells.
My question here is that my books will be arriving and I'm actually looking to do some protection work and blessing because i feel
I'm being really over whelmed by evil eye and slander, and even hidden intentions by a person in my inner circle, I'm really trying to get the power of the white light to protect me and make me invisible to fight against the darkness thats trying to keep me down.
BUT do i Absolutely have to buy the oils from LMCC to anoint my candles and herbs or can i just go ahead and buy them from my local occult shop here in Toronto?
My books will be here any day now and i really want to start this work. Already its nagging at me night and day. If i order online ill have to wait even longer.
any help is as always appreciated thank you so much.

Hello, morningstar_67 ,
We don't advise buying products from competitors.
Additionally, how could anyone even suggest purchasing an oil with unknown ingredients and then assure you that it would work?
We know for a fact that Lucky Mojo's oils have the ingredients needed to get the job done.
Enjoy your books! They are very well written and quite informative.
Take care

J-Mo, nice to see another shout-out for Hoodoo Bible Magic. It was such a blast to put together, and my co-author and editor, Professor Porterfield and Miss Cat, brought so much to the table.
A friend of mine showed his copy to a former Baptist pastor who grew up in suburban Atlanta, and who said it was just like the things he heard growing up. His college-educated family didn't do that stuff, but they all knew about it

I've enjoyed Hoodoo Honey and Sugar Spells and The Black Folder, very informative. I will be adding The Best of The Conjure Cook-off and Rootwork Recipe Round-Up to my next order.

Re: Hoodoo Bibliography and Book Suggestions for African American Folk Magic
And now we have FIVE MORE BOOKS about hoodoo at the printers and they will be ready for sale in mid-May.

"Paper In My Shoe: Name Papers, Petition Papers, and Prayer Payers in the Hoodoo Tradition" by catherine yronwode. This is a beginner and intermediate level introduction to the use of papers in magic and particularly in hoodoo. It provides a world survey of how magical papers are used in many culture and then provides page after page of practical love, money, protection, court case, and other spells in which name paper, petition papers, or prayer papers play a part. Illustrated with page after page of examples of magical writings and inscribed spells from all eras.
"A Deck of Spells: Hoodoo Playing Card Magic in Rootwork and Conjure" by Professor Charles Porterfield. This book brings back to the fore an old art of using playing cards in magical spells, long found in European folk magic and in Black American hoodoo. Also provided are several methods for reading cards -- and a hundred spells with playing cards. Jam-packed, valuable, and an eye-opener, this book is destined to change the way newcomers work in hoodoo by capturing for them the essence of an old, traditional methodology. Illustrated with examples of the actual written-on playing cards used by Professor Porterfield in the book.
"Deliverance!: Hoodoo Spells of Uncrossing, Healing, and Protection" by Khi Armand. This book is for anyone who feels crossed, jinxed, cursed, or messed up due to contact with negative energies, parasitic entities, or attacks that were sent through magical means. It is filled with diagnostic methods to determine what exactly is going on and prescriptive advice in the form of practical spells-casting to free yourself. A dense, thought-provoking, and supremely useful book, presented by a master rootworker and spiritual helper. Illustrated with pictures of historical uncrossing supplies from old hoodoo catalogues.
"Hoodoo Return and Reconciliation Spells: True Love Magic in the Conjure Tradition" by Deacon Millett. In this follow-up to his previous hit book on honey and sugar spells, Deacon Millett addresses the most-asked topic in hoodoo: how do i get my lover back? Written in an accessible extremely practical style, this book presents great historical spells from hoodoo's past, plus new and exciting ways of working refined from the Deacon's experience as a love-restoration specialist. Illustrated with pictures of historical love supplies from old hoodoo catalogues.
"Hoodoo Shrines and Altars: Sacred Spaces in Conjure and Rootwork" by Miss Phoenix LeFae. Coming to hoodoo from a background in Paganism, Miss Phoenix examines what distinguishes hoodoo shrines and altars from those of other religious paths, then delves into the difference between a working altar and a shrine f veneration, and shows the reader how to make, build, and work with every kind of permanent or temporary altar for every conceivable purpose. This book covers everything from vanity-table altars to elaborate installations with statuary and candles, and includes matchbox shrines, mantelpiece altars, and portable altars. A great book for the beginning practitioner, it will answer all your questions, from "What is an altar?" and "Do i really need an altar?" to "How to i clean my altar?" and "How do i take down an altar i no longer wish to work with?" Illustrated with pictures of historical altar supplies from old hoodoo catalogues.

I read that getting a book on reading tea leaves would be helpful for learning to interpret shapes and such in wax.. so is there a particular book about tea leaves that would be good for that?

Hi Naexis,
If you scroll down this page to the section of books on divination, you will find several options for books on tea leaf reading:
http://www.luckymojo.com/mojocatbooks.html
It never ceases to amaze me the kinds of stories that spell remains can tell!
For a bibliography of books about hoodoo -- some in stock, some out of print, and all very good -- see:
AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY OF HOODOO SOURCE MATERIAL
by Catherine Yronwode

For a complete list of books on hoodoo and other forms of folk magic and spirituality that are in stock and in print from Lucky Mojo, see:

While you are at that page, be sure to check out the section of retail discount packages -- special collections of books by subject or author that are sold at reduced prices as package deals

Re: Hoodoo Bibliography and Book Suggestions for African American Folk Magic
Hello,
I'm new to both Hoodoo and the Luck Mojo forum. Before making purchases for rootwork I wanted to educate myself first. I already ordered the "Master Book of Candle Burning Paperback" by Henry Gamache and I plan on purchasing "Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic: A Materia Magica of African-American Conjure" by Catherine Yronwode.
Now to my question I wanted to purchase one other candle burning book but I’m trying to decide between "The Magic Candle: Facts and Fundamentals of Ritual Candle-Burning" by Charmaine Dey or "The Art of Hoodoo Candle Magic in Rootwork, Conjure, and Spiritual Church Services" by Catherine Yronwode.
Which of these two books best complements what I already ordered and what I plan on purchasing?
Any advice on which of the two I should purchase or any other books that would help on my quest to learn more about Hoodoo would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for any and all help.

Re: Hoodoo Bibliography and Book Suggestions for African American Folk Magic
Hello, neophyte79 ,
Wow, that's a difficult question. They are BOTH excellent books. But, if I only had one choice (and I would think long and hard about that because they are both wonderful books), I would choose: "The Art of Hoodoo Candle Magic in Rootwork, Conjure, and Spiritual Church Services" by Catherine Yronwode.
You are already buying the: "Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic: A Materia Magica of African-American Conjure" by Catherine Yronwode.
That is a terrific place to start. Some of us lovingly call this book: "The Green Bible". It is the best.
I would start with these books first. Then, you might either want to buy more books ( www.luckymojo.com/mojocatbooks.html ) or, perhaps, take the Rootwork Course that Miss cat teaches. It is wonderful
Wishing you the very best
Take care

Re: Hoodoo Bibliography and Book Suggestions for African American Folk Magic
so I received your book yesterday Catherine, the mail man thought it hard to call me downstairs or ring the buzzer, so he ripped the package open and bend the book in half to fit it in the the box. Now do see why curses be fly left and right??, Im semi pissed off, I wish I saw who that mail person was. What made me buy your book was when I experimented with hot pepper sauce on a target, the results were very pleasing, so I started wondering what other concoctions I can come up with. Alot of the books on herbs online Ive read are not so good and just regurgitated nonsense, iVe heard good reviews on Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic, so im off to reading, let the fun begin..

Hi Lex009,
What a pity that your mailman was so unprofessional! I would report it to your post office, so they know that this happened.
You will absolutely LOVE Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic! I have my copy marked up everywhere, and I refer to it almost daily. There's a reason it's known as the Green Bible!
Good luck, and happy reading!

Re: Hoodoo Bibliography and Book Suggestions for African American Folk Magic
Between LMCCo, MISC, and YIPPIE, we have published SEVENTEEN SPELL BOOKS, TWO books on divination, and ONE book on the philosophy of a religion since 2002.
Some of the spell books are organized by type of work (herbs, baths, ensorcelled food, etc.) others are organized by condition (uncrossing, reconciliation, living outside the law, etc.) -- and some are wide-ranging compilations (The Black Folder, Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic, etc.).

Re: Hoodoo Bibliography and Book Suggestions for African American Folk Magic
Good day
I was wondering if these books were available on kindle or a downloadable pdf that can go on my mobile phone.
It would be great for those who have to keep it a secret from our family and friends that we are practicing hoodoo.
If there is an option to purchase them digitally instead of hard copies can you please direct me as to how I would go about this.
Thanks and blessings xxx

Thanks for your interest in our publications. All of our books are only available as print books, very reasonably priced, and 10% of the retail price for each book goes to the author of the book.
We do not publish electronic books and we never will.
If you find an electronic copy of one of our books, it is an illegal copy that was made to avoid paying the author for his or her work.
If you must keep your interest in folk magic secret, i suggest you rent a storage locker -- and store your materials and do your work there.
Good luck.

Thanks, didn’t think of that... great idea
. It’s sad that we can’t tell people about the things that we are drawn to. I tried to hint that I was studying the craft and was called an evil witch

I’m far from evil am one of the kindest people you could ever encounter.

By "the craft" do you mean Anglo-Celtic witchcraft? If so, our books may not be what you are looking for -- they are mostly about African American Christian folk magic. We do carry witchcraft books from other publishers in our shop, but that is not our primary focus.

No I’m interested in hoodoo .... picked up the word over the years of research over the internet. Good to know that is not the context in which I should be using it ( I thought all magic was “the craft” lol). Thanks for more clarification

Re: Hoodoo Bibliography and Book Suggestions for African American Folk Magic
I was wondering where I could go or what books I could get to study hoodoo. The real hoodoo, not the fake hoodoo. It seems like everywhere I go for information on the subject, it has nothing to do with the old true hoodoo that existed in the southeast more than a hundred years ago. Is it even possible to find information on genuine hoodoo or has it all been tainted by hollywood movies, fake stories, and fake 'hoodoo spells' that will make you a millionaire or help you get laid? I am fascinated by old folklore and I would really like to know what they practiced way back when.

Re: Hoodoo Bibliography and Book Suggestions for African American Folk Magic
Here is the latest offering in our inexpensive ($9.00 for 96 pages) book list. This one is especially useful for "beginners" because it is actually the very earliest hoodoo spell book ever compiled. It was first published in 1928, and there have been many variant versions of it over the years, but now, at long last, Lucky Mojo presents the compiled and complete "Genuine Black and white Magic of Marie Laveau: --

Re: Hoodoo Bibliography and Book Suggestions for African American Folk Magic
I just received my four new books today. I am so excited to get started. As I looked through the books I was so amazed at all the material to learn. I will be ordering more books and supplies soon. I am also looking forward to taking the class very soon. I am also reading the online book Hoodoo in Theory and Practice by Catherine Yronwode, It's very interesting. I did not realize it was that much history involved.

Thanks for your interest. HISTORY is one of the best things we can study, in my opinion, because it lends a great weight to TRADITION and to PRACTICAL KNOWLEDGE.
For a bibliography of books about hoodoo -- some in stock, some out of print, and all very good -- see:
