Altar Tools Religious Goods Sacred Images Questions and Answers
Re: Altar Tools Religious Goods Sacred Images Questions and Answers
Hello, mizznana002 ,
Unfortunately, you are asking us a lot about Santeria. And this is a Hoodoo Forum.
I deleted your details about Mama Oshun because, again, this is a Hoodoo forum.
Yes, this is true in Santeria but not in Hoodoo.
As far as you not having the desire to erect the altar, then don't do it.
I personally have one altar for everybody. Even in Santeria, w do no give each ancestor their own altar unless there's a very specific reason.
Take care

Perhaps to understand hoodoo and its relationship to Christianity better, you might spend some time reading this free web page:
HOODOO AND RELIGION
Is Hoodoo a Religion?
Who are the "Spirits" in Hoodoo?
But ... What About the Hoodoo Saints?
Can Catholics Practice Hoodoo?
Can Wiccans Practice Hoodoo?
Can Members of ATRs Practice Hoodoo?
http://luckymojo.com/hoodooandreligion.html
We have nothing against Santeria or other ATRs here -- it is simply that none of us here are teaching those religions. Santeria is an initiatic religion, meaning that a great deal of it is secret and is only given to laypeople by initiated clergy. If you have questions about that religion, please speak to a priest or priestess of that religion.

Water & Incense Questions
I have read you should put a glass of water on the alter--is that a Hoodoo tradition?, and if
so, do you change the water daily. Also is it good to keep incense burning as much as possible,
along with the burning candle (which is burning all day?)

stargirl,
Water is used on altars in many religious and magical traditions worldwide. Its intention and meaning may vary by culture, of course.
Among hoodoo practitioners, it is most often found on the altars of Spiritualists, for instance, those who came up under the teachings of Leafy Anderson.
You change the water when it evaporates, gets dusty, or daily, as taught by those in your religio-magical cohort.
The use of incense is optional, but those who use it in hoodoo tend to only light it while doing work, not continually. The continual use of incense is quite common among East Asians, however.
Candle lights too are optional on the altar, as is their continuous or intermittant burn. Some workers only set lights when they are doing a job. Different cutltures and different workers in hoodoo use differnt styles and methods.

naijasam,
Yes, you can do so. There is no restriction against such things. However, as with all altar tools, you should keep the candle stands clean. Melt out the old wax and wipe the candle stand. Use only a cleaner appropriate to the material from which the stand is made (that is, use no acidic cleaners like vinegar on marble, use only non-abrasive cleaners on brass, and so forth).

Best of luck to you.

Re: Altar Tools Religious Goods Sacred Images Questions and Answers
This might be a silly question but I just purchased some dragon's blood ink from a local occult store yesterday. I have read a few different uses for it and some seem contradictory but I suppose could all fall under "luck" category.
Anyway for some time I have been able to just write out what I want from my estranged beloved and it would manifest. I should note that I only do this when we are "off again" as we've been doing the "on-again, off-again" dance for nearly a year now and right now we are off. I typically just use a regular ink pen and lined legal pad. Whatever I write down almost always happens, sometimes immediately. For example, I was in the middle of writing "text me, text me, text me" over and over again one day and while I was writing it - he texted me. That being said, the last couple of times I have tried something like this, it did not work. I don't know if it was my confidence level or self doubt interfering, something on his end cutting off the connection, mercury retrograde, or whatever else could have been the case. But it didn't work nonetheless.
Anyway I was thinking about trying the dragon's blood ink and parchment for a little added "oomph" in doing this. I do have a honey jar going as well, if that's relevant. Is this something that you think would work? I am mostly asking in advance because of the expense of the ink and paper - I don't want to waste it if it's not going to work. I'm not doubting it per se, just curious if anyone else has done and had success with anything like this.
Thanks in advance!

Hello royal_PITA,
What you are describing is not how I understand the use of dragon looks ink in hoodoo and I think using it the way you are describing would be cost prohibitive. Check out this link (http://www.luckymojo.com/inks.html) to gain a good understanding of the way this ink would be used. I would recommend writing a petition on a piece of paper and putting it under a find candle.
Peace~

I actually did read that prior to posting but was curious if anyone else had experience with the type of manifesting I have done using the ink. Anyway I did end up doing a petition so I guess it doesn't matter haha. I will see how it goes.

Re: Altar Tools Religious Goods Sacred Images Questions and Answers
Hello!
I am very new to these practices though I have lit candles for certain purposes and set up an altar in the past without really having any idea what I was doing. So I'm very green. My question that I am hoping for some guidance on is that I am planning to do some candle work and maybe a simple spell along with it. However, I guess I'm wondering several things:
1. Does a spell need to be performed on an altar
2. If yes, should the altar be for a certain deity, such as Oshun if it's for love
3. If not, any good suggestions on what others have used on their altars that have worked for them?
I originally thought that I always had to go to Oshun for love problems but my boyfriend and I broke up much earlier this year and I was told to pray to St. Anthony and not light candles for Oshun at the same time. So St. Anthony came through for me and things are going well, but I want to keep things strong and progress the relationship and ultimately looking for marriage if it is meant to be.
Thank you so much for your help and taking the time to give some advice and experience.

You may be in the wrong forum. This is NOT a Lukumi / Santeria / IFa / Ocha / Orisha Forum. We do not deal with the West African deity / spirit / orisha known as Ochun / Oshun / Osun.
Praying to Saint Anthony for the return of a lover is something that Catholics do. Some hoodoo practitioners are Catholics, but most are Protestants and do not venerate saints.
This forum is about hoodoo folk magic, not about religions -- which is best, most effective, or how to be a member of one.
1) No, but you can -- see above for an entire book on the topic of altars in hoodoo!
2) No, because many practitioners keep their altars for their work, not for veneration. There are veneration altars, of course, but not everyone has one. And not every practitioner has a dedicated altar space, either. Read this thread from page one down to here and you will get lots of important information. Buy the book by Miss Phoenix -- it will give you the history of hoodoo altars and good spells too.
3) Hearts, flowers, raccoon penis bone, cowrie shell, John the Conqueror Root, Queen Elizabeth Root, paired Lodestones with Magnetic Sand.
Here, courtesy of Miss Elvyra of the Association of Independent Readers and Rootowrkers, is a Crown of Success altar for job getting and financial abundance:

I received my order yesterday and found one of these in the package. I just love it!! I plan to send this one on to a friend in England. He's going to love it, too! I imagine it will end up in the palms of people's hands in pubs all over the UK.
Thanks, for the wonderful gift!

Hi I am wondering crating an altar in my van to do my money work is okay? However I would have to bury the leftover stuff in my front yard and I am already wondering how I can do that if I can't even do the work in my place of residence.

Hello, Phienixx,
Yes, you can do that.
How about burying by a tree?

I had a question about placing water on the ancestor altar. I have read and been told by others that you should place a glass of water on the ancestor altar. No one has ever explained why though. Is it just to feed the spirits? I'm curious to know the origins of this practice.

Re: Altar Tools Religious Goods Sacred Images Questions and Answers
Hello!
It's been awhile since I've posted on here, and I was wondering if I could get a little advice concerning an altar that I want to put up. I don't know if this would be considered a veneration altar, or something else. I want to make an altar dedicated to achieving a goal; my goal is to get to school this year, since I didn't make it last year, and I had a lot of obstacles that blocked my way. The school that I got accepted into is in London, so I was going to place objects on the altar that symbolized London, travel and school. Also, I was thinking if it would be a good idea to use Road Opener products and the colors orange and purple on the altar as well, like setting orange/purple candles?
I don't know why I didn't think of making this altar months ago, but as time slips by it seems like more and more obstacles are building up, and I'm getting really scared. So I just thought that a road opener altar for London/university might help? I also read something, on this thread, about a wish box? Would something like that be a good idea to place on this altar as well?

Re: Altar Tools Religious Goods Sacred Images Questions and Answers
Ok, so I've read through all the altar posts that I could find, but except one person sharing an experience doing it, I haven't seen a lot on the topic of setting up a small altar for ongoing work done for a specific person. It seems altars dedicated to specific workings tend to be more topic-oriented than person-oriented. My best friend has a myriad of issues in his life (name it--he's probably got it going on, recovering from it, or trying to avoid it). He's doing the work on his end (therapy, job hunting, and reconciliation work), but I'd like to help things along on my end with some spells and prayer and work.
So--without delving into areas that would be off-topic for this forum--I guess my question is two-fold:
-While I realize there are no real "rules" in hoodoo altar setup, is setting up a space to do work specifically for one person a generally done thing? Any cautions here? Anything I should be aware of?
-Assuming this is a done thing, any thoughts on what to consider as I set it up? I want it to be an effective working space but not something that takes over a ton of surface area or a large amount of time. I'm thinking representational items (candles and otherwise) with a central area for ongoing spells, but I'd value input.

Re: Altar Tools Religious Goods Sacred Images Questions and Answers
Hello all,
I have a simple question. I have a small altar on top of my bureau with a few candles and offerings dedicated to saints I am working with. I want begin working with angels too but on my altar I cannot have any pictures due to my spouses religious differences. Is it enough that I have dedicated that particular candle to the Saint? I feel a strong connection but my only problems are not being able to have a picture or statue on my altar.
Any advice is appreciated, thank you.

A picture may help you visualize a saint and that might help you focus more, but a picture is not 1`00% necessary. Try small holy cards -- hide them in books.

Re: Altar Tools Religious Goods Sacred Images Questions and Answers
Hi everyone! I have a question that is fairly unique, and I'm genuinely not sure how to approach this. For about a month now, I have been doing a lot of research into my family tree. I managed to get a hold of some good records, and I found I am actually the 9th great-granddaughter of a woman executed in the 1692/93 Salem Witch Trials. I've spent about two weeks, and have managed to confirm this link with a "Salem Bloodline" organisation, which tracks the lineages of those involved in the Salem Trials.
I'm working on planning an ancestor altar, and normally I wouldn't go that far back for my own ancestors. But when I discovered this, I felt particularly "called" to it. I've been obsessed with Salem for my entire life, I even started writing a fictional novel one time, using this ancestor as a character before I even knew she was my direct ancestor. I do wonder if this is her spirit telling me she would like to work with me.
The thing I get a bit hung up about is the fact this woman almost certainly did not practice witchcraft, and was likely a Puritan who viewed any kind of magic as sinful. She most likely did not worship any Saints, and likely viewed the Catholics who did as sinful as well (the Christian aspect of Hoodoo for my own works is mainly Catholic based). Yet, at the same time, I would like to honour her. I feel horrible knowing her last days were painful and terrifying, and I don't want her to be forgotten. Especially since I myself am free to practice a magical tradition, without ever having to worry about legal repercussions.
Basically, I'm not exactly sure how to proceed. Her grave is in Salem, and I'm Canadian, and don't have the money or the means to travel there, as much as I'd like to see where she's buried. I apologise if this is a strange question, apparently it is quite unique to be able to directly trace back to one of the people executed, so I'm not sure who else to ask! I do feel very honoured to be descended from this woman who is a part of a very unique group, and I feel she definitely deserves a place along with my more recent ancestors, but I'm totally lost on where to start!
Thank you so much in advance!

Re: Altar Tools Religious Goods Sacred Images Questions and Answers
Hello WhateverfireWorks,
Wow, what a stunning discovery! And that's great you want to honor her spirit in a way that's meaningful for you and comfortable for her. You're probably right in reasoning that Catholicism wouldn't have been her cup of tea. But I think you could still create a very simple altar with a candle, a glass of water and a Bible. You could even do some research and find out what sort of objects would've been in her home and include a few of them on the altar so it feels homey to her. There are lots of possibilities.
Good luck to you!

Re: Altar Tools Religious Goods Sacred Images Questions and Answers
Blessings,
I just got my order of Dragon's Blood Ink and for an ink it is quite a lot. Which is great. Thanks Lucky Mojo!
My question is, I don't know what it is made of I assume some or a lot of actual Dragons Blood resin is used?
If so, can I also use this "ink" to add (via a dropper) to my candles for love/sex work for added aggressiveness and power?
Thanks all!

Hello HidingInSight,
Knowing Lucky Mojo, I think it's safe to assume that there is definitely Dragon's Blood Resin in that ink! And yes I believe you could add it to candles; you could also write out your petitions with it, which is how it's normally used.
Take care.

HidingInSight --
Yes, our Dragon's Blood Ink has actual Dragon's Blood resin in it. The Dove's Blood Ink and Bat's Blood Ink do not have animal blood in them. The names of these products, and the scents with which they are compounded, are traditional.
I would NOT add this or any ink to your candles as ink is WATER based and, as you know, water extinguishes fire! Use the oils instead.

Would holy water be useful to cleanse and purify an altar ? Along with prayer and asking the spirits for help?

Hello Blackcattt0123,
Yes those are great ideas!
Take care.
===
LuckyLady,
Holy water is water, so only use it on objects that will not be harmed by water. That is, do not put it on paper or leather. Just use common sense.

Re: Altar Tools Religious Goods Sacred Images Questions and Answers
JayDee hi, I think this is the place to ask this question because I I get confused because there so many forums to choose from,ok here’s my question, ok the only kit I ever did was my cut & clear ok with the break up spell kite and incense and cleaning supplies well I need to make mine a portable alter so I got 2 incense burners for one for the good work and one for the bad work was that a good idea? I got a candle snuff, I have lemon ammonia to clean, no to I need to buy a table cloth? And do I clean up with the ammonia before t start my work are after? And is there any prayers to say for protection, I just want to not have any of this come back on me
Re: Altar Tools Religious Goods Sacred Images Questions and Answers
Deliciousdonut,
This seems like the right spot to answer these questions. Many people use working alters based on 1. space 2. privacy, 3. need, 4. the magic being done. A dresser top, a chair top can all be alters. It is also very common for people to use different burners and area to work the good and the bad in. Cleansing the area to start off is ideal. You can then burn a nice incense as you pray to God for help, protection and call on any spirits, ancestors to come and aid in the work, speak to the herbs used in the work and appeal to their spirit as well. You do not need a table cloth, but many people use a table cover related to the work, maybe a red placemat for love work, green for money, a black one with halloween type skulls for negative work. I put my work in glass pyrex dishes when I burn them. A good prayer is the Lords prayer asking for protection, Psalms 23, Psalms 53 to protect against enemies known and unknown. Here is a LM book that is filled with great information on alters:
http://www.luckymojo.com/hoodooshrinesandaltars.html
You asked about prayers, though this book is not filled with prayers it is filled with using bible scripture in work and prayers and would go great with the book listed above:

Re: Altar Tools Religious Goods Sacred Images Questions and Answers
Deliciousdonut ,
Clarity incense is a great product to use on yourself when you need to think clearly, make a wise decision, or to help someone else do that. It is a goos incense to have in the collection for the alter work. As starting out I would order an incense of each: One for love, one for luck, one for cursing, one for cleansing/uncrossing. If you doing love work use the love incense, cursing etc.. As you work and try new products expand from there.

Re: Altar Tools Religious Goods Sacred Images Questions and Answers
Hello. Hows it going. i am a newbie. I found some hoodoo courses online and I am halfway through a beginners course.
I was just wondering. Do i need to set up an altar first before I start doing spells or can I just do a spell then do the altar setup later.

Re: Altar Tools Religious Goods Sacred Images Questions and Answers
faithandprosperity12,
Hello and welcome to the Lucky Mojo Forum.
You do not need an altar to cast spells in the African American hoodoo tradition -- depending on what kinds of work you are doing. Here are one dozen examples:
1) Foot-track magic -- no altar required.
2) Bathing -- no altar required.
3) Anointing of the hair or body -- no altar required.
4) Candle magic -- does require at least a flat space, which some call a working altar, even if it is not dedicatory or venerational.
5) Making a mojo or a doll -- requires only a work space, but many practitioners will dedicate the items with candles or incense at an altar.
6) House cleansing -- no altar required.
7) Spells cast in food -- no altar required.
8) Dusting lottery tickets with sachet powders -- no altar required, but some workers hold the tickets on an altar until the numbers are drawn
9) War Water or Hot Foot Powder at an enemy's house -- no altar required.
10) Paper in your shoe -- no altar required.
11) Freezer spells -- no altar required.
12) Drifting water spells -- no altar required.
I teach a one-year course in hoodoo and this sort of information is covered in my course. If your "beginners course" does not cover it, you ought to approach your own teacher and ask for better teaching.
This thread in the forum contains many pages of questions and answers -- i recommend that you go back to page one and read all the way to here. Then, if you have more questions, just ask.

Thanks for your interest in my course. About 2,170 people have taken this course so far, since it was first offered in 2003. This is not an online course. It is a regular program of study with me. It is taught in the form of a 432 page hard-bound book, with 8 homework assignments. As a student you will have access to a secret or private portion of this forum, where you will be able to view videos about African American culture and post messages about the lessons and the homework assignments, and i will reply. Upon graduation you will receive a certificate and you will be eligible for free apprenticeship training by me in person, at my premises.
In order to enroll, you will need to make some required purchases of specified types of herbs, minerals, oils, powders, incenses, bath crystals, washes, and other items, so that you can actually handle the materials i teach about and also have in hand the items needed to complete your homework assignments.
Read more about the course here:
http://luckymojo.com/mojocourse,html
Then, if you are interested in studying with me, please put the words, "I am a prospective student, please log my purchases" in the message area with each order you make until you have made all of the required purchases and we have scheduled a telephone interview so that we can get to know one another.
In the meantime, please enjoy the thousands of FREE teaching pages in this forum, courtesy of our dedicated moderators (graduates of the course) and also my free online book "Hoodoo in Theory and Practice," here:

Good luck and best wishes.

Re: Altar Tools Religious Goods Sacred Images Questions and Answers
I have my ancestor Altar set up and everything has been great so far. Pictures, bible, rosary, water, crucifix all feel right. I am stuck at the color of the candle, etc. I have a red oil lamp and feel drawn to use it, as red is associated with love, and I am reminded of my connection to my family and I think the words "Blood of my blood", and how we are connected by blood, it helps me to focus and appreciate my blood line and the fact that I am here because of them.
I have read that many people use a white candle. So, I am unsure what is best and don't want to second guess. Are there any insights/suggestions?
Thank you

Hi Jimm108,
If red feels right to you, then use it. There is no hard and fast rule about such things, although in hoodoo red is used for passionate love, not familial love, but you can go with it if it is speaking to you in the manner you describe.
Many cultures around the world use red vigil lights for ancestral veneration, so you would be in good company.
I hope this helps. Good luck.

Re: Altar Tools Religious Goods Sacred Images Questions and Answers
Greetings all. So happy to be here, for what is my first post!
I have a simple question. Recently, I bought a small metal cauldron from a thrift store. It has a special place in my kitchen, away from all of the mundane tools, but very much in the heart of the home. Now my formal training falls primarily under the Italian American folk magic camp, but I was wondering if you all know of any down-home prayers or procedures for blessing such tools in Conjure or Hoodoo.
Much love,
Faye Page

Welcome to the Lucky Mojo Forum.
Nope, cauldrons are not sacred items in hoodoo (rootwork, conjure) -- which is African American Christian folk magic. They are just kitchen or farm tools, used for cooking, rendering lard, soap-making, and stuff like that.
We do sell mini-cauldrons in our shop because customers who are observant in the religion of Wicca consider these small items sacred, much as Christians consider tiny crosses to be sacred reminders of the full-sized cross on which Jesus died, and they may use them as heat-proof containers in which to burn incense or herbs. In fact, we host a weekly podcast called "The Witch, The Priestess, and the Cauldron," which deals with European ancient and revival religious practices. Check out the show -- and send a message to the co-hosts Elvyra and Miss Phoenix asking for your question to be dealt with on their program, and i bet they will have a LOT of information for you. This is the show's Facebook page:

You're in luck, Elvyra and Miss Phoenix hosted a show on Cauldrons in 2016.

Thank you all for the thoughtful answers and insight. I will check out the above listing for "The Witch, The Priestess, and the Cauldron." Also, I feel I have a better handle now on how to navigate the forum.

Re: Altar Tools Religious Goods Sacred Images Questions and Answers
I like to set up an altar to pray to God and my saints family members. However my question is I have enemies and I like candles to evoke reversal spells, shut up spells, evil be gone candles and incense. Can I use the altar? Where does the altar need to be placed? I want to understand if I build my altar can I set it up for all our needs. Any advice will be appreciated.

Hello martinezmarco296,
It's generally a good idea to keep separate places where you work positive spells (like love, money etc.) and where you work negative spells (like cursing). Don't do all of that in one space.
I hope I understand your question correctly. Good luck.

You could have separate altar spaces on the same table if your house is small. You could mark off the space with different-colored altar cloths or a line of ribbon, beads, or even tape if that's what you've got. Separate tables, though, would probably be easier on your mind.
You may want to protect your worship altar with evil-eye charms, salt, or bay leaves at the corners -- but if you really are placing THE ALMIGHTY right in the middle of it, ask Him if that needs to be done.
