Luckbewithme876,
There is site a LM devoted to lodestones http://www.luckymojo.com/lodestone.html I personally keep them in there plastic bag with iron sand, due the fact sand gets everywhere, unless cleaning, or using, and I never recycle they get proper burial or tossed into the river.
Container wise I wish I could have glass containers with proper labels ala Wicca Martha Steward, but that's costly, and depending on use not good idea. I use mason jars, old pasta sauce jar, pickle jars, and beer bottles for witch bottles. Supermarket herbs: basil, thyme, rosemary, marjoram, cyanne, pepper, ect I normally keep in container came in. I use a lot of hyssop, rue, mint, bay, angelica, Irish moss, five finger, so kept in plastic bags. Poke, Oak Moss, Blackberry leaf, kept in paper bags, Poke cause its toxic, Oak moss due to size, need to keep dry, and in one piece, Blackberry because they got thorns. John the Conquer kept in purple bag in the sock draw, it like it there. Grains of Paradise i keep out of the kitchen so it not used a ordinary pepper, it hangs out with fenugreek, sassafras, cloves, and whole nutmeg in jars. All my oils in glass jars because plastic makes odd odor, and does not heat well. Graveyard dirt I get the day I use it, I do not store it in the house, because either the house protection will zap it or i just brought evil home, its normally in ziplock as it was easier to steal that way. Pine needle i get fresh, cause I am in the south.

Hi Luckbewithme876,
With regards to minerals, they stay good pretty much indefinitely as long as they are stored in a dry place.
This book in our series on practical folklore may be of help to you.
"This Amazing Book - Hoodoo Herb and Root Medicine" is a restored, revised, and edited presentation of a little-known classic of medical herbology, first published in 1947 by the Sunrae Products Company of Ogema, Wisconsin. In this new edition, catherine yronwode teaches you the "other" side of magical rootwork — the down-home, historical, and practical medical side of the work. With new added illustrations, and pages of practical recipes for home-made medicines, this book is designed as a page-by-page cross-reference to the author's previous best-seller, Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic. Use these two books in tandem to get the best of two worlds from Nature's herbs, roots, barks, flowers, and seeds.

Yes Sant430 - you're correct.
And thanks for the lamp idea - and if it were not for the small army of cats patrolling the house, I'd give that a try.... unfortunately, I'm trying to keep my name out of the newspapers...lol.

Mary Bee
is this why my rose got moldy TWICE with two different roses? And I thought it was a spiritual thing! I have a new one going now, I have had it open for over a week and I have changed its water twice (As thats what my local shop owner told me was the mold solution) - but now should I dump the water and let it dry out completely to all brown again? Or just the root part itself needs to be dry?
Thanks for any info!

Hi AsherDorian,
Yes, they are notorious for getting moldy. As a desert plan they usually just have one brief heavy rainfall where they open up and then close back up, so sitting in water isn't ideal for how they were made. I live in a fairly dry climate in the Rocky Mountains and the water will evaporate in about a week, which seems to be about right. I let it curl back up into a ball at the end of the week and let it sit dormant for another week. I know a worker who keeps two going in rotation, so as one is drying, the other is opening up.
I've heard of folks do various things to the water - a copper penny, a bit of bleach, those floral packets from the florist, etc. I can't vouch for any of them, but it seems best to let the plant have the condition it was designed for which is a heavy saturation of water to open up and then allowing it to then dry up completely.

Hi I have a question, can powder be substituted for hard to find herbs.
for example, if I cannot obtain a particular herb like lovage or John the conqueror or any herb,
but the powder is available, can it be substituted for dressing candles and doing candle spells?

Hi AlRam,
For dressing candles or using as incense, the powder can be used. If you're making a mojo hand, then you probably want the herb whole or sifted and cut. The issue with many powders is that they're easily adulterated so do make sure you're actually getting the right herb. For most herbs used in conjure however (and herbs like lovage and John the Conqueror specifically), you can get them via Lucky Mojo where they're quite inexpensive. You'll find the herbs in their on-line store here: http://www.luckymojo.com/mojocatherbs.html

I would suggest that you just take a cheese grater and grate the root into a bowl and save the excess for a later use.

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
Not sure where to post/ask are there any hoodoo uses for Apricot or Apricot Blossom? I checked the "Hoo Doo Herb and Root Magic" book and didn't see anything also googled/binged only found association with love, I ask other types of practitioners but still nothing. The reason I ask is I've been having an interesting experience with a candle I won years ago at a Chinese auction and it's very aromatic fills my entire house almost 2000sq. feet with its scent and it's Apricot Blossom scent, every time I burn it even for short periods my father who has COPD among other issues ends up having a better day health wise... So I'm just wondering if there is anything Apricot Blossom is used for and is there more I can do with it?

I'm not a chemist or experienced candlemaker, or an expert on COPD. But I wonder if there might be something in the formula of the apricot scent that has a positive medical/physical effect on your father's health? You'd have to ask a chemist and a doctor, I think.azurkgny wrote:The reason I ask is I've been having an interesting experience with a candle I won years ago at a Chinese auction and it's very aromatic fills my entire house almost 2000sq. feet with its scent and it's Apricot Blossom scent, every time I burn it even for short periods my father who has COPD among other issues ends up having a better day health wise...
I don't know of any associations in hoodoo traditions for apricot blossom or any part of the apricot tree. If there are any spiritual reasons for the candle's good effects on your father, a divination might uncover them.
Off the top of my head, though I'd be inclined to ask if there are any deceased members of your family who loved apricots or their scent, and were on good terms with your father while they lived.
Good luck,
Miss Michaele

Thanks so much Miss Michaele
I am looking into more reasoning and to figure it out not just for my father but if there is something about it that may help other as well, I'll have to ask my father who may have liked apricot on his side. I know my maternal grandmother liked apricot, but she was not on good terms with my father.
Sorry for my delayed thanks
Sincerely, KG

Are the herbs in the supermarket okay to use in magic? Or are they already "dead" from not being fresh long enough?
Also what would be a good way to simply preserve how long herbs, oils, sachet powders, etc., last? I've already started stocking herbs in jars, but is there some other way to preserve them?

Hello Luckbewithme876,
I have heard of people using herbs from the supermarket for their work. I personally just order mine from Lucky Mojo because I trust their products to be the best quality.
How long something is good for depends. Oils stored in a dark, cool and dry place can last for a long time. Powders are the same way. For individual herbs it depends on how well they were dried and what the herb is really.
Peace~

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
I do buy herbs from the grocery store and a number of sources. I don't feel that they're "dead" per se, but I do like the idea of purchasing from Lucky Mojo just for vibrational and quality reasons. Some things I just can't find anywhere else, like Deer's Tongue, and LM's prices are very very reasonable. If you compare the cost of star anise or poppy seeds in your baking aisle to that of LM's it just make sense. I do just feel too that there's something to buying products from a store like LM, which specializes in rootwork. I feel like it raises the energies. But...no, I don't think the herbs are dead. I think the spirits that exist in them are always in them, waiting to help and fulfill their potential. The ones in the grocery store just usually go unfulfilled and wind up in poppy seed muffins.

Thank you for your quick replies, Natstein and luckycat13. Thank you for the advice as well. I will from now on buy them from LM whenever I have the chance or it's practical (sometimes it's quicker to just go down to the store and buy some than ordering it in the mail).

Quick question about Hawthorne Berries...it says to sprinkle them around the home to keep another person from becoming your spouse's lover.
We're not married nor do we live together, so should I sprinkle around HIS home or around the one who I want to keep from being his lover?
Thanks!!!

I was wondering how figs are used in love spells, i have read about freezer spells slicing figs using people's names but someone told me these are more less to destroy a relationship or freeze them out of love, can anyone share tricks using figs to attract someone you want with name or photo, how it will work etc?

FatLip,
I don't know what you mean about "freezer spells slicing figs using people's names" that are "more less to destroy a relationship" or where you read that information.
A fig represents a womb (uterus). Fig spells are for promoting reproductive health or denying reproductive health. I wrote about this here:
http://luckymojo.com/freezer.html
None of those fig spells are about "relationships." They are about having (or not having) babies. (By the way, there are sweet fig and
pear spells to foster baby-making, but that is a different topic for a different time.)
Good luck.

thanks for the info, i guess i meant to say that but assumed they where related to love spells
thats cool. ok So figs are useless in love spells, i thought they represented a vagina and used to arouse one :p
I did hear of fruits been used in spells in the past, is there a thread here about this? i tried looking but safari keeps crashing for some reason.

No, figs do not represent a vagina! They represent a womb. This is called "The Doctrine of Signatures" and it is about how the physical appearance of a plant or fruit resembles a part of the body.
This is a customer forum for people who purchase spiritual supplies from the Lucky Mojo Curio Company, so there is no thread about grocery store fruits -- but you are in luck! We have a book called "The Black Folder" that has a whole set of these fruit and vegetable spells. (There are many, many other spells in the book too -- it is well worth the investment.)

I was recently referred this site for herbs. My question is about using them to make tinctures: if i made them, would they would work, and would I use a similar amount as one might an essential oil?
Same question with extracts.
Thanks!

Balm of Gilead will always have a sticky sap to them when you purchase them from a quality supplier such as from the Lucky Mojo Curio Co.. I work with them as is for various works.
Many blessings.

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
Hello, theroberts,
In folk magic, you will find herbs in
• culinary deployment, fresh or dried, in food or drink,
• dried to carry in a bag or dress a candle,
• used as a sprinkle or compounded into a powder or an incense,
• boiled in water for a decoction or steeped in water for an infusion to be sprinkled or used in a wash or water,
• extracted in a solvent (ncluding alcohol as a solvent, for which the proper term is a tincture).
Now, getting to your question regarding Hoodoo tinctures:
The most common form of alcohol used in hoodoo for tinctures is whiskey. The method is low-tech, and simply consists of chopping the material up or using it in whole form, adding it to a bottle of whiskey, letting it sit for at least a month, and using it by the spoonful as a tonic (if the herbs are edible and / or non-toxic in tincture quantities). The alcohol may be decanted if you prefer, but some people like to keep larger whole roots in the whiskey for spiritual and aesthetic reasons. Tinctures may be added to foods, if the herbs are non-toxic. They are suitable for dressing mojo hands, adding to baths or floor washes, and using as sprinkles. They cannot be used to dress candles unless they are allowed to evaporate before lighting the candles.
Because tinctures are liquids, i recommend that for much more information on the use of liquids in conjure, including complete instructions on making infusions and decoctions for use in hoodoo folk magic, please see the great book by Aura Leforest: "Hoodoo Spiritual Baths: Cleansing Conjure with Washes and Waters: --

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
Thanks for the reply and the book link. To make sure I'm understanding you (because I'm only one cup of coffee into the day) it is okay to use tinctures in place of essential oils as long as I let the alcohol evaporate before dressing candles. So if I had a recipe for an oil that called for cinnamon oil I could use a tincture made from cinnamon? Is there a standard-ish conversion formula? Instead of 5 drop of cinnamon use eo x drops of tincture? Or instead of n drops of vanilla eo use x drops of vanilla extract?
Or could you recommend a book that would have this info, including the one you already recommended?

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
Hello, theroberts ,
Miss cat has already answered your question about the oils. You cannot use it for dressing candles. It probably wouldn't work well to anoint yourself either if you are going out and want the aroma of the oil.
I am not aware of any conversion table nor of any book that Lucky Mojo sells about this. And we don't recommend books that Lucky Mojo does not sell.
As far as essential oils are concerned, I wouldn't use a tincture in lieu of an essential oil.
I think that this will be all that we will answer regarding this topic. This is a difficult and in depth conversation that you will have to research. We can't walk you through all the steps.
Sorry.
Wishing you the very best with this endeavor. I hope it's successful

Well, your forum, your online shop, but I'm really only trying to find how much herb I'll need to order from you.
Info want to point out, though, that what you've said contradicts miss cat's statement that tinctures can be used to dress candies after the alcohol has evaporated.

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
theroberts,
I think you are asking questions about folk magic as if it were some kind of science project. You ask if it will "work." Do you mean magic ... or the making of tinctures from a chemistry-lab perspective?
I think i told you how tinctures are made in hoodoo and how they are used on hoodoo. Anything else you do will be you own unique and idiosyncratic de novo application. It will not be what comes out of African American folk magic.
As for use on candles -- sure, cologne or perfume can also be used on candles, but the alcohol has to evaporate before you light them or you will get a flaming hazard.

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
Guilty as charged. I'm actually a mathematician by training and a college professor and that part of me crops up at the most inconvenient times. I'm am trying to get in touch with my family's Appalachian magic roots and broaden my horizons to other folk traditions as well . Thanks for pointing this out. I'll experiment and see what happens and where it leads.
Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
Calamus root whole, High John The Conqueror root, Lucky Hand root, Queen Elizabeth root when used in a mojo bag and if it is time to refresh the bag. Do we replace the these roots or can we use back the same root?

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
According to cat's book, for the purposes of keeping someone domestic one should collect nine tubes of a dirt dauber's nest with the larvae still in them.. I'm not able to do that, for various reasons. So would one nest tube (vacated by its former occupants) still be effective?

Mint and sage are good choices. Yarrow is also useful if some courage is needed as well.

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
I have a lovely patch of bugleweed (Ajuga reptans) growing in my back yard. The honeybees and bumblebees love it.
I feel drawn to it, as well, but I'm having trouble finding much information on it. Specifically, I'd like to know if it has uses within the hoodoo tradition.
I did a search and found that it is listed in "Charms, Spells and Formulas" by Ray Malbrough. He includes it in a list of herbs to promote psychic visions. I've found a couple of places where it is mentioned in Wiccan spellwork. I've also found a couple of herbal medicine sites that mention it, although they appear to be conflating two different herbs with similar common names.
If anyone here has any more information about this plant, I'd love to hear it.
