tonight's show (#2283)

Unread post by paulette28205 » Fri Nov 26, 2004 12:05 am

I was able to hear tonight's hoodoo hour. Thank you Dr. Kioni! I
do have a question. Cat, what were you saying about eating fish and
drinking milk at the same time?

(I was referring to the old Jewish prohibition "You will not cook a kid in its mother's milk" (a law based on the idea of humane animal husbandry) which has become widely interpreted in Jewish law as not mixing any meat with any milk. There are also laws forbidding entirely some types of mammal meat (e.g. pork) and some types of fish (e.g. catfish) and some entire classes of animals (no crustaceans). Cause, like it says, "These shall ye eat of all that are in the waters: whatsoever hath fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers, them shall ye eat. And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you." (Leviticus 11: 9-10) However, fish are not considered meat OR milk -- so fish can be cooked in milk. But chicken, although not a mammal, and thus not having a mother that gives milk, is considred meat, and cannot be cooked in milk. Jews joke about mixing meat and milk all the time -- it's a form of culture-specific humour, based on the fact that the rules are so complex and illogical, and people bend them a lot. For instance, Jews who do not keep kosher may joke as thye eat shrimp (an "abomination"), "Well, at least they weren't served with a milk sauce!" Or they might joke as they eat a ham sandwuch (an "abomination"), "Well, at least there's no cheese on it." It's just funny Jewish homour (funny to Jews, anyway). I was making a joke, in other words. --cat)
