I tend to wait until there's a fair bit of wax accumulation before burying it, but sometimes I'll plan on burying it once the next candle has finished and then it melts and burns up the accumulation and I end up with a nice clean lid again. :D

For the protection part I'd recommend focussing on the following:

Oh, and I forgot to add that I sometimes add a 'helper herb' to graveyard dirt dependent upon type of working to give it a boost.

For instance, if I'll add sage for protection work...mullein for empowering spirits...cinnamon for love work.
