I carry an old-fashioned skeleton key on my keyring for luck in opening doors and getting past obstacles.

Thanks to all for comments: I always figured it happened in love spells and I explained it to myself like this - if someone did a love spell for a particular person who didn't seem to notice them it would work to get them noticed ("deep calls to deep" I was taught) but then, if they had qualities ...
